Semtex and Powdered Milk

2021

Semtex and Powderd Milk was a quote taken from an interview with the DUP’s Arlene Foster when asked about a ‘hard border’ in Ireland. I grew up in the border town of Newry, Co. Down in the 1970s and 1980s and was always fascinated by the Army watchtowers which were situated along the border where I lived.

Semtex and Powdered Milk is part of an ongoing project exploring the concept and reality of borders, specifically the border created 100 years ago by the Partition of Ireland. The work is an exploration into the thirteen rmy watchtowers that were located along the south Armagh border during The Troubles and a visual translation taken from the drone imagery that I commissioned of the sites. I was involved in the Frontier Work collaborative project whereby visual artists were asked to look creatively on the events of 100 years ago, borders and Brexit and to generate a creative output in response.
